Abstract

This study purposes to consider about the symbology  and its relation with the sacred present in the Jorge Andrade’s play Pedreira das Almas (1957). Sings like: characters’ name, spatial centrality represented by the church and cemetery, saint’s images, the cross, and others signs that calls the reader/audience’s attention to the oppositional relations in the text. These oppositions unfold to represents the relations between present and past, tradition and modernity, holy and profane. In the approaching of the Pedreira das Almas’ symbology, this paper’s intend is to emphasize the significance of the symbols in the production of the meanings’ process, in the highly poetic language of the text. According to Durand (1993, p.12), the symbolic image is the “transfiguration of a concrete representation through an abstract sense. The symbol is, than, a representation that makes manifest a secret meaning, is the epiphany of a mystery”.
