THE THOUGHT OF COMENDADOR JOAQUIM ANTONIO DE AZEVEDO ABOUT EDUCATION, INDUSTRIALIZATION AND CIVILIZATION.
Abstract
Em 1o. de março de 1867 o Comendador Joaquim Antonio de Azevedo apresentou ao conselho administrativo da Sociedade Auxiliadora da Indústria Nacional (SAIN) a proposta para criar a primeira escola primária noturna destinada aos jovens e adultos da classe operária e que seria mantida por aquela associação civil de direito privado. Esse empreendimento expressa a crença de que o ingresso do Brasil no rol das nações civilizadas implicava no desenvolvimento da indústria nacional e esse patamar seria alcançado se estivesse assentado na educação profissional. Se o ensino primário era a porta de entrada para o ensino profissional, o país daria assim o primeiro passo a caminho da civilização ao formar operários e mestres capazes de dirigir os trabalhos das oficinas. Este estudo bibliográfico e documental de caráter histórico tem por objetivo reconstituir a trajetória de vida e o ideário do Comendador Joaquim Antonio de Azevedo. Utiliza como fonte primária os relatórios da SAIN publicados no jornal O Auxiliador da Indústria Nacional no período de 1865 a 1892. O estudo insere-se na discussão acerca da ampliação de fontes para a investigação na área de História da Educação e aponta a importância da imprensa nessa tarefa.
