Abstract

This article wants to reflect on the issue of national identity formation in the Jacques Poulin’s  novel Volkswagen Blues (1984) with one of the theoretical bases Stuart Hall, who claims that the identity construction process corresponds to a set of factors historical and social. We will make a historic journey to understand how myths were formed from Quebec nation, and how those myths reappear in the story. Next, we will undertake the perspective of Lacanian materialism, especially theories of Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek, to read the novel, discuting the spatial displacement, the relationship between the nation itself and the rest of the continent as a search for a common identity
