Abstract

On-line communities have been represented an alternative for the dissemination of speech, access to information; citizenship; mobilizing of ordinary people to defend their interests, and especially in the construction of identities. Theoretical frameworks used are Bauman (2005), Hall (2006), Moita Lopes (2010), Mocelim (2007), Recuero (2009), Rocha and Couto (2010) to anchor the discussions about identity and cyberspace. Thus, this paper analyzes the activities of a virtual community on Orkut created to substitute teachers, and through the interactions in the posts we reflect on the process of teachers’ identity construction. We observed that the negative representations about themselves published by them in the posts evidence the socially constructed meanings attributed to the fact that they have temporary contract work. We conclude that the language and social interactions represent the teachers’ social identities and that in times of cyber identities are hybrid, transitional and fluid.
