This article aims knowing the conceptual history of frontier as well as its most appropriated notion for the human sciences nowadays, especially in geography. The main idea of this paper is to show that the mention and the use of the word frontier not only suggest a boundary line in a given geographiec space or unidimensional space of the political life, were a State-nation ends and another one begins. Even though, in the recent years the notion of frontier hás been associated with the political-territorial boundary, the terms – frontier and boundary – do not keep the same meaning, since, as any other concept, the frontier one has also undergone changes and incorporated new elements through the years, by the advance of societies; the development of new production techniques and by the political, economical and cultural changes.
