Spelling errors: a look at the arbitrariness
Keywords:
Writing, spelling mistakes, elementar schoolAbstract
In this paper, we present some preliminary results of a research about spelling mistakes in relation to the cultured norm of Brazilian Portuguese of students from the 7th grade of elementary school. Errors motivated by the presence of orality in writing, difficulty to operate with regularities and irregularities of language have made the task of writing a difficult route. Many factors may contribute to this situation, lack of reading, traditional teaching or even the total absence of an effective work with the spelling in schools, based on the real difficulties of the student and arranged to take him to reflection. The research was based on studies by Bortoni - Ricardo (2004, 2005, 2006) , Cagliari (1999, 2003, 2009), Morais (2007, 2010) and Zorzi (1997). Data were collected in texts performed to diagnose which are the most recurring spelling errors in writing in a class of 7th grade. The mistakes were classified according to the proposal of Cagliari (2009 ), and the ones related to arbitrariness of the written code were quite expressive.
