Abstract

The present study aims to analyse the construction of regional identities of the protagonists on the novels A bagaceira (1928), by José Américo de Almeida, and The Grapes of Wrath (1939), by John Steinbeck. Both novels are set on a context of mass migration in periods of social or economic crisis and, due to the occurrence of these notoriously historical events, families were displaced from their communities. This migration movement is what we will work with as an uprooting movement. “Uprooting”, as we understand it, is the withdrawal of the individual from his or her place in the world – whether this “withdrawal” takes place voluntarily, by force, or even seasonally – taking him or her to the condition of a foreigner in a new space in which memories and society itself are not familiar, thus requiring them to rebuild their perception of community and identity. The individual displaced to the position of a migrant is placed in a weakened position against the one belonging to the local community due to their social isolation. Regional pre-concepts are largely responsible for generalized suspicion among these groups, leading to a struggle between people who occupy positions of similar classes, and ending a cycle of violence against uprooted characters. Therefore, it is necessary to work with theories which dialogue with the position of the immigrant, such as Said (2003) and Sayad (1998), among others.
