Abstract

This article seeks a double project: at the same time that offers an analysis of major

novels from the South African writer J. M. Coetzee, articulates a critical review on the latest

critical book released by him, Inner workings: literary essays, 2000-2005, a compilation of articles

published in English in 2007. The texts considered, both fictional and critics, offer a vision of

liaison and dialogue that promotes Coetzee between the notions of center, edge, identity and

belonging. This study focuses, in particular, movements of historical revision that can be seen in

the work of writers read by Coetzee in his tests, and how it fits with their work as fiction writers.
