THE CO-OCCURRENCE OF FOREIGNIZATION AND DOMESTICATION IN THE THREE BRAZILIAN TRANSLATIONS OF THE SHORT STORY “THE INVISIBLE MAN” BY G. K. CHESTERTON

This article aims to analyze the co-occurrences of foreignization and domestication strategies as a translation method, which seeks translational solutions to the problems faced by translators while translating adjectival, nominal and verbal collocations. These problems were extracted from five fragments of three translations from English to Brazilian Portuguese, of the short story "The Invisible Man" (1911), classified as detective story genre, from the short story collection The Innocence of Father Brown, G. K. Chesterton, one of the translations from 1997, was made by Lúcia Santaella and published by Imago publishing, the second from 2006 by Carlos Â. Nougue, by Sétimo Selo publishing and the third from 2011 by Henrique Guerra, by L&PM Pocket collection. The five translated fragments were analyzed according to Schleiermacher’s translation concept (2011), Venuti’s concepts of foreignization and domestication (1995) and Sinclair’s collocation concept (1991). In the end of the analysis, both the translation method and the personal style of the translators were detected, confirming that the target text was subjected to different influences, such as: linguistic interference, the style of the author of the source text and of the translator, editorial policies, among others.
