About 80% of the population at some point in their life, has experienced the complaint of back pain, and there is a growing increase in demand for treatment of this disorder, causing an increase in spending on health care. The physical therapy is one option, one of the techniques used is the mechanical traction, but beyond controversy, it is still poorly researched. The aim of this study was to perform brief review on the mechanical traction, to select studies that suggest important topics for further research on the use of traction in cases of low back pain. Methods: the literature review was conducted in Portuguese, on the treatment of the spine using mechanical traction, among the studies found were selected those who suggested topics for future studies. To this end, it was opted for a search of references in the databases: Lilacs, Bireme and academic Google; using the keywords "mechanical traction" and "spine", individual or associated. Results: within the adopted parameters were found only four studies, with indications for future research. Conclusion: there is a lack of research in Portuguese about the use of traction in the spine, and the directions for future studies are also scarce.
