Abstract

Objective: Characterize the profile of children victims of external causes admitted in the pediatric unit and pediatric intensive care in Londrina teaching hospital, Paraná. Method: Quantitative research, retrospective, descriptive and cross. The casuistry consists of children records from birth to twelve years who were admitted and remained hospitalized in pediatric intensive care units from January 2007 to December 2009. The data were collected from medical records and inserted in Excel for Windows and analyzed in SSPS®. Results: In the three years studied were identified 62 records, of these 82% cases of accidents, 18% violence, with 73% male. The most affected age group was 10 to 12 years incomplete (32%). The falls account 31% of the cases. The region of the body most affected were members 35%. Of the total, 61% of victims underwent surgery, 8% transferred to intensive care and 98% were discharged. Conclusion: It is necessary to know the profile of the hospitalized children victims of external causes, which, when not fatal, leaving injuries and sequel that may cause family and personal trauma, besides the high cost to the health service and thus invest in preventive actions to reduce such health disorders.
