Objective: to describe the epidemiological profile of notified cases of meningitis in Brazil from 2012 to 2021. Matherials and Methods: this is a descriptive quantitative study, developed from Datasus data (variables: sex, region of residence, age group and evolution). Results: reported cases dropped during the years surveyed and men are the most affected. The Southeast Region has the highest percentage of notifications (54%) and the South has the highest prevalence (1.07/1,000). The first decade of life is where there are almost half of the cases. The age groups from 40 to 59 years have an index of 4% of cases and 7% of deaths. Discharge rates proportionally track case rates. Conclusion: despite the decrease in cases, it is noted that meningitis is still a public health problem, with considerable mortality. Prophylaxis with campaigns on hygienic habits and comprehensive vaccination are essential.
