Objective: to evaluate the academic motivation of university students from a private institution of higher education in the Federal District, Brazil. Materials and Methods: this is a quantitative, descriptive study through the application of two questionnaires: a sociodemographic and educational and the Academic Motivation Scale. Results: 350 nursing students participated, which were evaluated according to their intrinsic, extrinsic motivations and demotivating factors in the academic process. Conclusion: it was evident that motivation changes during academic training. In the early years the intrinsic motivation is evident; in the final years, the extrinsic motivation. Thus, universities must have different motivational strategies to keep the student in the graduation process as a whole.
