Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy is a special period in the lives of women and their families and deserves individualized care, offering health education to reduce the negative repercussions of fragility in the face of doubts and apprehensions. Objective: To understand how pregnant women are receiving health education during prenatal care in Primary Health Care (PHC). Methodology: A qualitative study with nine pregnant women over the age of 18 who received prenatal care in PHC. Face-to-face recorded interviews were conducted with guiding questions. Content analysis guided the study. Results: Four themes were identified: 1) Guidance received during prenatal care; 2) Warning signs during pregnancy; 3) Preparation of the Birth Plan (PP); and 4) Expectations regarding guidance during prenatal care. Discussion: The reports highlighted the lack of guidance received in prenatal care with incipient reports on warning signs, and little knowledge about PP. Considerations: There is a need for professional training, qualification, information and permanent qualification, as well as instilling in pregnant women their rights and power of choice, as well as identifying the importance of this health education process as a means of empowering women throughout the pregnancy and puerperal cycle, minimizing unnecessary obstetric interventions and corroborating healthy outcomes, which could reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.
