Abstract

Objective: Puerperal infection is responsible for causing an increase in maternal mortality due to bacterial infections. It is a fact that the route of birth interferes with the occurrence of infections, therefore, the study aims to verify the prevalence of puerperal infection related to cesarean section and natural birth in a teaching hospital in western Paraná. Materials and Methods: The research was carried out through the analysis of 15 medical records of women who underwent birth in the studied hospital and had puerperal infection between January 2017 and December 2022. Results: Through statistical analyses, it was observed that the Patients were on average 27.7 years old and almost all of them had had a previous pregnancy. A rate of puerperal infection was drastically lower than those found in studies, but that related to cesarean section was higher, with this surgical procedure being a risk factor for these complications. Conclusion: This reality allowed a lack of monitoring to be verified after patients were discharged, contributing to a reduction in available data on puerperal infections and, consequently, interference in the real prevalence rate of these infections. Therefore, measures are necessary to ensure that surveillance is carried out more appropriately, so that prevalence surveys are reliable to the hospital reality.
