Abstract

Starting from the premise that normative moral theories, especially utilitarian ones, consist of at least a theory of duty and a theory of well-being, I present the two main subjectivist theories of well-being, namely, hedonism and preferentialism, highlighting the independence of these theses in relation to the utilitarian moral theses themselves. From an argumentative exposition, I reconstruct a plausible theoretical path that can be followed from the most rudimentary hedonism to culminating in a theory of informed and strong-tied preferences, in order to suggest the occurrence, in this process, of a theoretical qualitative advance.
