Abstract

The contrast between the cosmological conceptions of Parmenides and Heraclitus guides the approach of this essay within the scope of design philosophy, and whose main interlocutors are the philosophers Hans Jonas, Ernst Cassirer, Bruno Latour and Vilém Flusser, and the design theorists Per Galle and Richard Buchanan. The background is established with the recurring debates about the “context of indeterminacy” of design problems. To understand the idiosyncrasies of this field on metaphysical foundations, we move away from the rigidity of substantialist ontologies and dualist ethics and focus on the ontology of becoming, monist ethics, and the concept of “homo pictor” of Jonas, a thinker influenced by Darwinian evolutionary theory. The aim is to explore the connections between these philosophical concepts and design characteristics, to the benefit of less antagonistic actions by designers in their relationships with projects, the built world and nature.
