Abstract

This study aimed to verify whether the disclosure of information classified as indicative of sustainability indeed reflects organizations' ability to survive. This proposal investigates the paradoxical situation in which companies publicly recognized as "sustainable" face serious difficulties in sustaining themselves. To illustrate this situation, the case of the company Americanas S.A. was studied, which filed for the highest amount of debt in a judicial recovery process in 2023, and its sustainability reports from years prior to the formal request for legal protection did not indicate any warning in this regard. Sustainability indicators based on GRI standards and those aligned with ESG standards were analyzed. Both indicated, in 2021, a favorable operational condition of Americanas S.A., masking the existing insolvency risks. Future studies are encouraged to explore the effectiveness of sustainability indicators and the respective organization's ability to survive over time.
