Nutritional status of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and the relationship between the pathophysiology of the disease and diet

Abstract

Objective: To relate the physiological changes present in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) with the diet of individuals, in addition to comparing the nutritional status of elderly people with and without the disease. Material and Methods: The present study was carried out from a literature review, through searches in the PubMed, SciELO, MEDLINE, LILACS and BVS Brasil databases. Results and Discussion: Among the articles analyzed, it was observed that the vast majority of elderly people with AD participating in the studies, presented cases of malnutrition and hyperphagia, thus showing the importance of adequate nutrition to their needs. In addition, several comorbidities are related to AD, such as dyslipidemia, high blood pressure and diabetes, which, consequently, further affects the health and well-being of these individuals. Conclusion: AD in the elderly is negatively related to diet, since with the progression of the disease, the difficulties of patients increase, and nutritional monitoring is essential in order to ensure improvements in the quality of life of the elderly.
