PREVALENCE OF RISK SCORE FOR CLASSIC HYPOTHYROIDISM IN ELDERLY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence score of risk for classical hypothyroidism in elderly students participating in the University of the Third Age (UNATI). This is a quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory research, with a sample of forty men and women aged over 60 years. As an instrument, a summation score with eleven signs and symptoms for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism (Zulewski) using an adapted questionnaire The sample was separated into two groups: group with diagnosed hypothyroidism (DG) and undiagnosed group (GND), and the most reported symptoms were weight gain and slowness. It was concluded that the prevalence of high risk for hypothyroidism was 2.5%; of intermediate risk 77.5%; and low risk 20.0%. Thus, this form of low-cost screening made it possible to identify patients with a predisposition to the development of classic hypothyroidism.
