Abstract

Based on Linguistics and with application in the Social Applied and Social Science areas, ten independent indicative interrogative English phrases of examples used in the book “Survey Questions: Handcrafting the Standardized Questionnaire” by Converse and Presser (1986) were analyzed and classified. Following the studies of SFL (Systemic Fuctional Linguistics) the Textual Metafunction - Interpersonal Theme - was explored. These examples are a sampling of the Interpersonal Theme in questions, especially in questions of survey, representing forms of interaction. With this study, it was possible to affirm that the Marked Theme in the questions means a signal for the interviewed, that is, a form of focusing on the subject to be researched. This signaling guides and produces more confident answers, it facilitates the interaction between interviewer and interviewed as well.
