Abstract

Abstract: During the summer season in the municipality of Laranjal do Jari - AP, an increase in the burning index is common due to the practice of clearing land for agroforestry plantations and reducing grass in flooded forests (igapós). Since a large portion of housing in this region is near the Jari River, with houses on stilts, mainly in the São José community, these fires contribute to smoke pollution throughout the region, leading to an increase in viral diseases such as the flu. Therefore, the objective of this study was to conduct analyses through questionnaires applied to assess the increase in flu cases resulting from smoke inhalation in the communities of Santo Antônio da Cachoeira and São José. The evaluations conducted showed that, according to the 25 interviewees from the communities, 88% confirmed an increase in flu cases due to smoke inhalation. Additionally, 98% of the interviewees stated that the year 2023, compared to previous years, had one of the worst burning indexes.

Keywords: Decreased production; wildfires; viral diseases; flu symptoms.
