The neighborhoods “Antônio Dias” and “Pilar”: the anthropocultural communication in the toponymy of Ouro Preto – MG

Language reveals itself mainly in speech and writing, so that world conceptions are expressed insofar as characteristics intrinsic to the history of a place, culture, or people are evidenced in language, which is the essential vehicle in the knowledge mediation, and transmission. Cultural and social changes result in modifications in vocabulary usage, in such way that lexicon units emerge, fade, and re-emerge with new connotations. Since social practices are reverberated by words, lexicon permeates man’s relationship with society and reflects the cultural achievements of a community. The study of toponymy, within interdisciplinary scope, presents itself as a way to know cultural, social, political, and religious trends of peoples who occupied and named the places of occupied physical space and, thus, gave uniqueness to the occupation. Through the analysis of the names of the two oldest neighborhoods in Ouro Preto, “Antônio Dias” and “Pilar”, whose first settlements were formed in the seventeenth century around the gold extraction in the region, this paper aims to present the results of a Master's research that sought to recover part of the cultural memory of the city of Ouro Preto - MG. Considering the rivalry between these neighborhoods since the emergence of the first settlements, baptized with their own terminology, which extended until the appearance of the brotherhoods, which corroborated the emergence of legends and stories transmitted through oral tradition; For analysis, we elected these places that became unified, in 1711, and formed Vila Rica, today Ouro Preto. This is an important research theme as rescues the history of the eighteenth-century city of Minas Gerais, scene and stage for various events and transformations that corroborated the constitution of the Brazilian society.
