Inside, against

notes on space and memory in contemporary Cuba

Abstract

The article seeks to analyze the ways in which a corpus of works recently produced in the field of Cuban literature and visual arts interrupt the historical distinction between “inside” and “against”, with which the revolutionary state managed the public space of the island. The corpus selected introduce a disagreement by revealing that the space of the “inside”never coincided with its representation, but that there was always a rest of spaceuncounted –which is also a rest of the meanings that were produced there and circulated there–whose existence can be narrated through memory, thus exposing the complexity, heterogeneity and diversity that constitutes the Cuban society
