Abstract

This essay analyzes Lady Macbeth’s problems of memory, madness and conscience in Macbeth, by Shakespeare. I will approach the issue of memory which comes back to haunt Lady Macbeth as moral conscience. Feeling guilty pops up in Lady Macbeth’s conscience, which could not be suffocated, when both murdered the King Duncan. Firstly, I will analyze the repressive attitude by Lady Mabeth toward Macbeth, an attitude that tries to repress her husband’s conscience; additionally, I analyze the projection of the maternal figure onto Lady Macbeth. Secondly, I will analyze the return of guilt in Lady Macbeth’s memory and how it haunts her and makes her mad.
