Abstract

Within the many hybrid genres found on contemporaneity, the historiographical metafiction, style of literary creation that mixes both historical and literary discourses, is one of the genres that best works with this mixture for the production of its narratives. Thus, what is observed is the hybridity in high levels, on which literature and history are nothing but discourses, human productions (HUTCHEON, 1991), liable of manipulations, omissions, mistakes and errors. For such productions, there is no way of speaking about truth and lies, fact and fantasy, once every different vision of a determined fact can be seen as perspective and, in this sense, all of them are valuable. Having in mind the novels The Memoirs of Christopher Columbus (1987) and Vigília do Almirante (2003), what is tried to be demonstrated is how such narratives, contemporary literary creations, deal with the mixture between both discourses, and how they differentiate, one with other. The contributions made by scholars such as Fleck (2008), Aínsa (1991), Menton (1993), Pulgarín (1995), among others, become relevant to the research, for the differences in the levels of metafiction in each of the novels result in ideological differences, and such authors, when working with such a literary model, have set out the foundations and characteristics of the model.
