Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the importance of the transport system, particularly of national inputs in Brazilian production, captured through the collected amount as margin charged on transport services used by various sectors of the economy in the period 1990-2000. Values were used as multipliers of production and intermediate consumption, estimated according to the input-output theory of Leontief and margin of transport, obtained directly from the array of transportation calculated by the IBGE. With the purpose to evaluate the sector inter-relationship among the transportation margin, the intermediate consumption and the multiplier production, the SUR model was applied, using data on panel. The empirical evidence suggests that there is a strong correlation among margin of transport, intermediate consumption and multiplier of production. The results highlight the importance of the transport system for the production process, justifying the making investments in infrastructure and transport technologies that allow the efficiencies to the economy as a whole.
