Abstract

Urban centers have been strongly influenced by of the global warming. One way to mitigate the effects of climate changes on urban centers is by means of reforestation actions. It is introduced in this paper an approach to assess the impact of lack of tree coverage in urban streets, and its influence on gasoline consumption, CO2 emission and cost related to gasoline consumption. It was presented index of tree coverage and urban street temperature based on geoprocessing, applying the NDVI and NDBI indexes.Temperature measurements of internal and external surfaces of a medium size vehicle, have shown that the lack of tree coverage induced an increase of temperature of 28.66º C in summer day in the city of Foz do Iguaçu. This temperature raises, calculated for 1545 parking lots at downtown in Foz do Iguaçu, resulted in annual increase of 700 thausend liters of gasoline, additional emissions of 1,440 tons of CO2 and additional costs of 4 million BRL per year.
