Abstract

Discussions about the construction of Sustainable Educating municipalities began with the 1st International Congress of Educating Cities, held in Barcelona in 1990. In Brazil, these discussions began in 2004, in the state of Paraná, together with the Hydroelectric Environmental Education Program Itaipu Binacional under coordination of the Ministry of the Environment. In this sense, the present study aims to reveal the guidelines for the construction of a Sustainable Educating municipality. Methodologically, the work was based on a qualitative approach involving bibliographic and documentary research on materials published in printed and electronic media that relate to the chosen theme. The results reveal the guiding guidelines to be adopted by municipalities, namely: investment in the local educational process, appreciation of local culture and respect for diversity, promotion of democratic spaces and strengthening of collectives in the municipality, as well as appreciation of the environment in its various dimensions. The importance of implementing sustainable educational municipalities stands out, if not in their entire dimensions, but at least respect for the natural environment, local customs, strengthening the democratic environment and the adoption of other principles linked to sustainable development.
