Abstract

Environments little influenced by human activity play a vital role in preserving species diversity and providing essential services to aquatic ecosystems. However, the Quati stream, located in Cascavel-PR, faces serious problems due to high pollution, such as eutrophication and toxicity. This study highlights the urgent need to understand and mitigate the environmental impacts associated with the Quati stream. With this in mind, this study aimed to assess the occurrence of synthetic polymers in the diet of Ancistrus mullerae, a loricarid endemic to the Iguaçu basin. The fish were sampled in 2023 using the electrofishing technique. The gastrointestinal contents of the fish were analyzed using the volumetric method and the composition of the diet, including the search for synthetic particles, was recorded using light microscopy. The polymers found were predominantly blue fibres and located in all the individuals.
