Brazil has been prominent on the global stage of fish farming, especially using cage farming systems, which can influence environments by allowing free water circulation and continuous entry of organic matter into the aquatic system. This study focused on assessing how the interaction between ecological and histopathological aspects can identify influences of fish farming, contributing to the development of sustainable production policies and environmental conservation. To achieve this, the liver of Plagioscion squamosissimus (wild) was evaluated in areas with and without fish farming. Nuclear hypertrophy, presence of melanomacrophages, vascular congestion, and picnotic nucleus were observed more frequently in fish from cage farming points, suggesting that water quality changes, as well as stress promoted by fish farming management, may induce histopathologies. These findings highlight the need for more sustainable management policies for aquaculture.
