Abstract

This essay analyzes the play Richard II, by Shakespeare, and its emotional ambivalences towards the paternal figure. It will be used the essay Totem and Tabu by Freud, aiming at discussion how Freud’s assumptions are configured in the play. In this play, particularly the deposition of the king provokes ambiguous feelings due to this act, because his subjects fear the consequences of the violation of an anointed king. Thus, among those ambiguous feelings regarding the sovereign figure there are the conflicts of conscience. Besides that, the very superegoic structure of Tudor and Elizabethan society pervades the play so that it determines the individual’s ambiguous feelings and conscience.
