Abstract

O Alienista, by Machado de Assis, has a vast critical fortune that aims to study the presence ofmadness in the narrative, in addition to its historical background. Many of these studies see the main character, Simão Bacamarte, as a scientist or caricature of the scientific figure. However, the article intends to go against this view, defending the hypothesis that the doctor, as soon as he gives in to madness at the beginning of the narrative, is only an alienated person with the pretense of being an alienist, and thus cannot be a representative of Science of the time. For this, a careful study will be made of the figures labeled as crazy by Doctor Bacamarte.
