Abstract

This article seeks to understand how historical events of the liberation struggle of Guinea-Bissau, the coup d'état of November 14, 1980 and the political-military conflict of 1998-1999 are addressed in Tony Tcheka's and Lagartixa Okonhoko Npasmadu's poems. Guinean literature has always been characterized as a space for discussing events that mark the social memory of the country, and the three events mentioned above are the most representative. Through a qualitative analysis mediated by some references of memory studies, the article will seek to understand how the epopee of liberation coexists with the disillusionment that followed years later in the works of the two authors, one belonging to the first generation of writers from independent Guinea-Bissau; and the other with the first work published in 2010, 37 years after the country's independence. The analysis of their poems shows how they are instruments of counter-memory compared to the official memories conveyed about the historical events discussed in this paper.
