Abstract

This paper aims to examine the portrayal of black mothers in Conceição Evaristo’s literature through the marks of violence and solo motherhood in the characterization of Maria and Benícia, characters respectively present in the short stories “Maria” and “Zaíta esqueceu de guardar os brinquedos”, both part of the collection Olhos d’água (2016). This work highlights how the author uses the “escrevivência” to address gender and racial oppression, denouncing the violence that pervades the bodies of black women. In order to develop this analysis, the theoretical framework of this reading includes studies developed by Bourdieu (2017), González (1982; 2020), Hooks (2019), Mbembe (2018), Pacheco (2013), Vèrges (2020), among other scholars that investigate the subject.
