Abstract

This paper examines the translation of Brazilian queer literary texts into English, focusing on the American anthology Cuíer: Queer Brazil. The study assumes that translation is a complex activity that involves negotiation between different languages, cultures, and ideologies, and therefore is not a neutral process but a politically and culturally loaded one. The article analyzes how queer perspectives can question translation practices and how translation can help increase the visibility of queer people in literature and society at large. Excerpts from Caio Fernando Abreu's short story “Terça-feira gorda” and its respective English translation, “Fat Tuesday” by Bruna Dantas Lobato, are analyzed, highlighting the erasure of certain Brazilian cultural items in the translation as well as the portrayal of queer experiences. The article concludes that translating Brazilian queer literature is an important activity that can contribute to building a more inclusive and diverse society.
