Abstract

This article aims to analyze some classical elements of Aristotle's Rhetoric (2006) in the Sermon of Sixtieth (2021), by Antônio Vieira (1608-1697), and encourage the reading of the classics in light of Italo Calvino's definition of the classics, particularly in his recent and complete work, Why Read the Classics (2023), in order to constitute an imaginary two-way poetic-literary structural road between some fragments of the baroque classic Sermon of Sixtieth, by Father Antônio Vieira, and Aristotle's rhetorical principles that are the structural basis of the Peripatetic Path between two rhetoricians from different times. Thus, this analysis highlights the application of persuasive logic and classical Aristotelian stylistics, evidencing the influence of the reception of the classics in the temporal and timeless argumentative construction. The analysis does not intend to create a rhetorical-oratorical manual nor to analyze the entire sermon, but, perhaps, to arouse the curiosity of its readers and listeners by glimpsing elements of politeia, polysemy, and rhetorical polyconception in the formation of the Brazilian Nation, although the prevalence of these elements in the discursive analysis remains open. The Sermon of the Sixtieth vieirianum is influenced and confluenced by Aristotle's Rhetoric, a relevant fact that justifies its analysis, since its content is not merely Brazilian Baroque (1601-1768), but transcends the context and leads to the discovery of the reception of the classics and universal poetic-literary principles, from the inaugural time to the augural poetic-literary context.
