Abstract

Cuando Sara Chura despierte (2003) by Juan Pablo Piñeiro combines a transformation message with an aesthetical rigor. It is a carnivalesque and grotesque discourse about the uprooted Aymara peasants who migrate to La Paz from their communal lands. All is but tension between opponents in a remarkable novelistic structure that reproduces, like Aymara textiles, the woven threads  of their culture and specifically the situation of Aymara and the influence of their past in the present as the origin of their self-steam and their way of being and placing themselves in the world. The precise and symmetrical structure of Piñeiro’s novel and the beauty inherent to it provides a mediator’s function for the coexistence of heterogeneous cultures in a central space with a dynamic tension, where they could keep their individuality and their particular shudder before the sacred. In its own texture the novel is proposing a peculiar form of coexistence of cultures that live and have been living for centuries in contact and in conflict.
