Abstract

The aim of this paper is to characterize the other, the one that is different, in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In order to do that, first of all, we contextualize the work of Shakespeare so that it is possible to apprehend the main characteristics of the Elizabethan period, a time of contrasts which was ideal for the development of an artist such as Shakespeare. Then, we analyze the other, the one that is different, by observing the relationships based on power established between colonizers and colonized people within a relational space, basing our analysis on the theories developed by Homi Bhabha. Finally, we analyze the relationship developed between Prospero and Caliban, reflecting upon the strategies used by the colonizer such as inferiorization and degradation, which lead to the characterization of the other as barbarian or animal like due to an ethnocentric point of view.
