Abstract

In the film Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno, 2006) and The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del Diablo, 2001) Mexican director Guillermo del Toro approaches the issue of historical representation having the Spanish civil war as background. With regards to genre, both narratives can be understood within the broad designation known as ‘historical film’. However, with the introduction of elements related to the genre fantasy, the representation of the historical category in both films become more complex, producing different layers of comprehension and challenging the understanding of specific aspects of reality. This paper aims at highlighting some central scenes in the films in which fantastic and supernatural elements defy the traditional understanding of historiography.
