Abstract

In José Saramago’s The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, the questioning of the truth called historical is highlighted in the narratives which focus the Spanish scenario of 1936. The narrative deals with episodes which led to the Spanish Civil War, as a kind of crossing of the twentieth century. Saramago’s novel offers a convincing and painful panorama about one of the biggest historic-political convulsions of civilization. Saramago’s writing emphasizes the imaginary of the destruction of a Spain and a people with its freedom annulled.
