Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the discursive construction of Brazil in Pero de Magahães Gândavo's chronicle History of the province Saint Cross, which is commonly named Brazil (1576) and in Lancelot Voisi de la Popelinière's travel collection The Three Worlds (1582). The Portuguese grammarian-chronicler defends the Portuguese right of possession over Brazil and projects the competing nations, mainly the French, as privateers. The Huguenot Popelinière, by the other hand, defended the French right of possession and exploitation over the region. The political clashes between these nations that occurred in the political scenario also took place at the editorial scenario.
