Abstract

This communication aims to discuss, through a comparative analysis, the relationship between patriarchal domination and narrative in the novels Dona Guidinha do Poço, by Manoel de Oliveira Paiva, and Lavoura arcaica, by Raduan Nassar. If it is a fact that both belong to different literary moments, in relation to its production and reception, it can be said that the works are similar, given the fact they both present the reader examples of how the patriarchal order functions in certain socio-cultural environments. Both Guidinha, in Paiva's novel, and Ana, in Nassar's novel, live in relationships which violate what is conventionally considered the social norm between the genders. Therefore, this work discusses the narrative strategies employed by the novels in order to influence (or not) the reader's interpretation (or judgement) of the characters' behavior: is it possible to say the narrators lead us to certain preferred readings, based on patriarchal principles, inclined to reject and punish – either with Guidinha's arrest or Ana's murder - a woman who opts for the expression of sexuality and not chastity?
