Abstract

These remarks are a reflection on some aspects of the self-writing by Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. They are based on the “Preface” of the book Tentativas de Mitologia (1979) and on an interview given by the author to the magazine ‘Veja’ (1976). The hypothesis is that Sérgio Buarque had invested in the perpetuation of his memories in a period of intense historiographical criticism, giving a precise meaning to his reception for the following generations. The responses to the criticism leveled at his essayistic production, at the 30s, a speech about history, and the author’s position in favor of democratic values can be perceived in the selected texts.
