Abstract

The construction of the Transamazônica highway in 1970 motivated euphoria demonstrations with the possibility of "occupation" of the Amazon and and its riches exploration, but also concerns related to the risks that this work could provide to the public health. The analysis of official projects and reports, interviews with residents, national newspapers and essays published during this period, show that there were investments in public health, but those were not enough, because there have been considerable cases of deaths of workers and farmers by diseases and accidents. The repression forces tried to hide the news about diseases in Transamazônica area, because it was a fundamental part of huge investments which, according to the dictatorship, would contribute to take Brazil to worldwide standards.
