Abstract

This paper analyzes the society-nature relations that characterized the history of the Mucuri basin, in the period 1852-1983. It is shown that patterns of Man-Nature interactions were decisive for the formation of regional space and greatly contributed to transforming the Mucuri basin in a “problem-region”. The fonts used are official reports and statistics, notary documents, foreign travelers’ narratives, local memoir texts and testimonies from ancient inhabitants of the region.
