Abstract

The Garotas do Alceu (Alceu’s girls) circulated weekly during uninterrupted 28 years in what was the great Brazilian magazine of yore – O Cruzeiro (1928-1975). Illustrated by Alceu Penna, the pin-ups’ column can be considered the first column of the illustrative genre nationwide in Brazil. This article aims to weave narratives plots over the images and texts, which were part of those two weekly pages in tabloid format. The illustrative pin-up style is put into question considering the mass circulation in American magazines and its popularity during World War II. The turnover of the topics covered by the pin-ups of Alceu Penna makes us perceive it as a column of behavior and humor. Finally, this short paper aims to address the images, texts, themes and trajectory of a column of dolls, which amused and brought to dream generations of Brazilian in the mid-twentieth century.
