Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the over-representation of female poverty in Brazil and its states, in 2013, identifying the factors that increase the probability of female-headed households being inserted in poverty. In the sequel, by estimating logit, identified the factors affecting such insertion. As a corollary, there was the existence of an over-representation of women in poverty in Brazil by focusing more abruptly in the North and Northeast, reaching more effectively black women, mixed race and indigenous. Among the factors that increase the chances of a household headed by women living below the poverty line, if had it: to be the North / Northeast region, have homes with only the mother's presence, not be occupied (in the formal work) and family size. Factors that tend to diminish such probability were: the urban area, be of white color, educational level, age, and age as the woman went to work.
