ESTIMATION OF DEMAND FOR SANITARY SEWER AND COLLECTION GARBAGE IN BRAZIL USING MULTINOMIAL LOGIT MODEL

The sanitary sewer system and domiciliary garbage collection service are very important to garantee clean environment and healthy conditions for the population. Therefore, it is important to study the factors that determine the demand for these services. This article aims to estimate the demand for sanitary sewer and garbage collection services in Brazil based on household micro data collected from PNAD/IBGE 2005 survey. It was used a multinomial logit model to estimate the influence of various factors on the economic agents' decision related to choices of different alternatives of sewer system and garbage disposal. The results showed that the household income and education level strongly affect the demand for these services. Localization, size of family and size of the house are also important to explain choices of improved systems.Downloads
