Abstract

This article proposes an approach for ex-ante economic evaluation of beef cattle feedlots wherein it has been a priori set initial weight, breed and quantity of animals, type of facilities and feedlot duration. In doing so, the decision problem consists basically in finding the daily weight gain that closely approaches feedlot maximum profit. I propose ways to estimate the main item costs of feedlot and show how predictive equations for dry matter intake and nutritional requirements can be combined with a linear programming problem for minimizing ration cost so to estimate feeding costs. The concept of quasi-fixed costs is introduced in order to make it more realistic and flexible to consider the possibility of production inactivation. The approach is applied to economically analyze a hypothetical example built as a 120-day feedlot of 220 castrated bulls of 354 kg initial liveweight for the year 2009. The coherence of results when compared with the literature shows that the approach can be used to support ex-ante economic analysis of beef cattle feedlots in other years and under other similar settings.
